On November 4, 1825, Charles X inaugurated the Saint-Martin canal, which went into operation after more than 15 years of construction. Nearly 200 years later, it has become one of the favorite spots for Parisians, who love to relax there as soon as the sunny days arrive. So for this exceptional anniversary, why not enjoy a stroll on the water or along the banks, discovering all the mysteries and secrets of this green gem in the heart of the capital.

The little newcomer

In 2021, we celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Saint-Denis canal, which connects the Seine to the Ourcq canal. The following year was a grand celebration for the Ourcq canal's bicentennial. And in a few months, it will be the turn of the Saint-Martin canal to celebrate its milestone.

of the double centenary. But if it is the youngest, it is still far from being the ugly duckling of this great family of canals.

This must-visit meeting point of the 9th and 10th arrondissements, once used as a freight passage, is now a charming little spot loved by Parisians who come to , enjoy a game of pétanque, or more recently, cool off in the Seine. Indeed, since this year, the canal has been connected to Paris Plages, allowing for its very own swimming area. How delightful!

A grand anniversary celebration

On the occasion of this bicentennial, Seine-Saint-Denis invites you to enjoy this little canal 4.5 km long which uniquely features a 1800-meter underground section, between Place de la République and Place de la Bastille. An enchanting place, where you can truly enjoy.

e by foot or by boat. And the good news is that most of the trails are already open!
