As mentioned above, there are hundreds of thousands of villages in France. While most of them blend into the background, some stand out with surprising characteristics: the most haunted, the most flowery, the ugliest (because after all, it takes all kinds to make a world), and even the tiniest! It's this last one that piques our interest today, as we take you on a journey to discover Castelmoron-d'Albret, which has a total area of… less than that of the Place de l’Étoile!
The Smallest of the Stars
A little-known fact: France boasts the highest number of municipalities within its borders in Europe. Huge cities like Arles, Valencia, Marseille, and even Paris (even though the capital is far from counting).
among the most spread-out cities in the country), or others that, on the contrary, are more like a tiny ant in size. For example, we could mention Rochefourchat in Drôme, with its one resident, or Castelmoron-d'Albret and its tiny (we mean really tiny) 3.3 hectares of land. That's just a smidge less than the notorious Étoile roundabout. And we assure you that not only is it smaller, but it’s also much, we mean way more peaceful.Voir cette publication sur Instagram
The smaller it is, the prettier it is
This tiny little town, which certainly doesn't shine by its size, is nonetheless the pride of its 53 inhabitants – representing a remarkable 1,325 people per square kilometer, a density higher than the national average – and we can see why. Built on a rocky promontory, Castelmoron-d'Albret enchants us with its picturesque surroundings that take us back in time. An ancient medieval village that holds breathtaking remnants and attracts several thousand tourists each year. And the bonus is, given the size of the village, you don't need a week to explore it, it can be done quite quickly!
