There are some birthdays that stand out more than others, and let’s just say that celebrating 400 years is quite a milestone. Which Parisian institution is blowing out that many candles, you might ask? It’s one of the oldest in the capital: the Jardin des Plantes, of course! Located in the 5th arrondissement, this iconic garden spans 24 hectares and was founded in 1626 at the request of King Louis XIII. This year, it promises to offer a floral display as exceptional as its age.

A Colorful Birthday Celebration

Did you take a stroll through the Jardin des Plantes and get captivated by the beauty of its floral arrangements? Well, that’s just the beginning! In total, 25,000 biennial plants and 23,000 bulb flowers — including tulips and anemones — planted between mid-October and mid-November 2025, will bloom this spring. This artistic creation wasn’t chosen randomly: divided into four zones, it pays tribute to the artists Pierre-Joseph Redouté and Nicolas Robert.

The colors range from red, black, yellow, and orange in the Thouin area, to pink, yellow, purple, white, and gray on the Redouté massif. Over in the Descaisne area, the flowers reveal more purple, white, red, and pink shades, while in the rose garden, the anemones and tulips are pink, yellow, white, and mauve

New Flowers for Summer

Between mid-May and mid-June, a new wave of plantings will take place themed around the gastronomy of simples. We will find plants that have been used in cooking and phytotherapy for centuries. A unique way to honor the very close connection

between humans and nature and what it can offer. Originally, the Jardin des Plantes was indeed intended for the training of future doctors and pharmacists.
