In 1890, Vincent van Gogh, following the advice of his brother Theo, settled in Auvers-sur-Oise to dedicate himself to painting and to find some inner peace. Although he passed away just a few months later, the town has since been dedicated to celebrating his talent and paying tribute to this genius painter. This summer is no exception, as the artist will be honored at the castle, thanks to a unique exhibition, as well as 3 outdoor cinema sessions, with a carefully curated program…
Painting the Stars
Here we go, we’re officially entering the best time of the year, the season that welcomes the first rays of sunshine and sees the cultural institutions of Paris and its surroundings unveil their summer program. Among these, the château d’Auvers-sur-Oise and its open-air cinema are making a joyful return for 3 evenings of movie screenings under the starry sky. This year, the spotlight is on the great Vincent van Gogh, with a specially curated selection of films.

And it all begins on July 8th with Lust for Life by Vincente Minnelli. In 1956, the Italian filmmaker was the first to bring the life of van Gogh to the screen. The film traces his life from the mines of Borinage, as he starts his painting career, to his suicide 12 years later. A powerful and touching classic. We continue on July 15th with Séraphine by Martin Provost. Here again, we have a beautiful ode to painting presented by the château. Finally, the 2025 edition will wrap up on August 26th with Suzume by Makoto Shinkai. While the film doesn't directly talk about the painter, it does highlight the passion he had for Japanese prints that stayed with him.
until the end of his life.
Art, again and always
So, get ready for 3 exceptional evenings this summer to dive into the tragic yet poetic universe of the painter with the severed ear, which will transport us into the heart of the 3rd art. All of this takes place in the breathtaking setting of the Château d’Auvers-sur-Oise. Plus, we get to enjoy the trip while discovering the exceptional Van Gogh, the Last Journeys exhibition, which immerses us in the last 4 years (turbulent) of the painter's life. This is a tribute you won’t want to miss !
