The sun is peeking out, and all the Parisians are in the starting blocks to find the sunny spot to hang out for the beautiful days. Some will choose the trendy new rooftops where they can sip a high-up Spritz, while others are looking for places to reconnect (a bit) with Mother Nature. If you belong to the second category, we have great news for you! In April, a new third place is about to welcome you with open arms on the Petite Ceinture in the 18th. I present to you the Jardin des Traverses, which combines a lovely vegetable promenade, a guinguette, and a pedagogical greenhouse.
An interdisciplinary project in the 18th
Behind the Jardin des Traverses, there’s a motivated team combining the efforts of several collectives like Green Resistance.
Green Resistance, Vergers Urbains, and the Léo Lagrange Federation, all supported by the City of Paris, the 18th District City Hall, and the Île-de-France Region. Together, they envisioned this space – part of the ParisCulteurs project call launched by the City Hall in 2018 – which finally came to life in July 2024. The idea? To think about and create new ways of living together in Paris, in a green area that welcomes both strollers and those curious about agriculture, featuring a free market garden open to everyone!Voir cette publication sur Instagram
After an official inauguration in September and a soft opening last summer – which still welcomed some planned activities with local schools and special events – the Jardin des Traverses is fine-tuning its spaces and continues to develop the area for a re-opening scheduled for mid-April, just in time for the arrival of the (real) lovely days.
Vegetable Garden and Outdoor Dance Hall for the Beautiful Days
On site, this third place offers a lovely area to escape a bit from the hustle and bustle of the city, featuring a 800-meter-long market garden path that connects Porte de la Chapelle and Porte de Clignancourt. It's a beautiful space where you can enjoy spring strolls and sports activities, with various aromatic plants, vegetable plants, and fruit bushes planted by local associations. You can also find the Educational Greenhouse, an urban agriculture project to take care of the plants throughout the year, creating a wonderful space for everyone.

And for those looking for a new spot to chill all spring long, Le Jardin des Traverses is opening a riverside café starting in April. An outdoor bar with a wide selection of local craft beers, including ones from the microbrewery Goutte d'Or. On the food side, both professional chefs and amateur cooks will be behind the scenes.
