In May, do what you like, and one thing is for sure, with the numerous public holidays this month will offer us, we are definitely going to treat ourselves. How? By enjoying getaways to the four corners of France and Europe, of course, but also by taking the time to rediscover our beloved capital and its rich culture. However, be mindful. The 1st, 8th, and 29th of May are public holidays, and not all museums and monuments in Paris will necessarily be open on these three dates. Let's check in with you about the places that will be accessible during the May holidays.

Many Closures Planned for May 1st

Heads up! May 1st is special since many museums will close their doors for Labor Day. So we have to say goodbye to the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée du Quai Branly, the Musée de l'Orangerie, and many other must-see Parisian museums. But don’t worry, you can still enjoy other fantastic cultural institutions! The Paris Aquarium, The Atelier des Lumières — featuring a new exhibition on The Little Prince — the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, the Chocolate Museum, the Dalí Museum, the Grévin Museum, the Montmartre Museum, the Maillol Museum, and the Natural History Museum will all be open!

Most museums and monuments open on May 8 and 29

Starting May 8, and also on May 29, things are getting back to more or less normal. In addition to the museums and monuments mentioned earlier, several others are also reopening their doors to the public. This includes the Arc de Triomphe, which will be open only in the afternoon on May 8, the Conciergerie, the Musée national Eugène Delacroix, the Army Museum, the Louvre, the Musée national Gustave Moreau, the Musée de l'Orangerie, the Musée d'Art moderne de Paris, the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie, the Palais de Tokyo, the Musée d'Orsay, the Bourdelle Museum, the Quai Branly Museum, the Palais de la Porte Dorée, the Cernuschi Museum, and many others.

The Romantic Life, The Pantheon, the Guimet Museum of Asian Arts, the Petit Palais, the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Luxembourg Museum, the Cité of Architecture & Heritage, The Catacombs, Sainte-Chapelle, the Institute of the Arab World, The Cité of Music, the Rodin Museum, the National Picasso Museum, and the Marmottan Monet Museum.

The castles around Paris also affected by public holidays

The opening of museums and monuments, particularly castles around Paris, are also impacted by these public holidays. On May 1st, only the castles of Breteuil, Vaux-le-Vicomte, the Claude Monet foundation in Giverny, the Musée en Herbe, and the Air and Space Museum will be open.

You'll have to wait until May 8th to visit the Fontainebleau Castle, Versailles Castle, Compiègne Castle, Maisons Castle, Vincennes Castle, and Chantilly Castle, as well as Écouen.
