Winter is approaching quickly, secretly making us dream of snowy landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see, and colorful auroras taking over the dark sky. While these are two things you might find in northern Finland or Canada, there’s no need to travel across Europe or the world to experience them. Just one hour's drive from Paris, the Vexin Regional Natural Park, located between Yvelines and Val d’Oise, lets you admire this fabulous celestial phenomenon.

An Ideal Spot to Observe the Northern Lights in Île-de-France

Here you are in the middle of 1000 km2 of nature, an absolutely perfect space to watch the northern lights since it is free from light pollution and allows you to admire a crystal-clear sky. It’s up to you to choose your evening wisely, using weather forecasts and predictions from specialized apps like Aurora Alerts or My Aurora Forecast. The rules are simple: the weather must be kind, no light should interfere, and most importantly, you need to be patient!

A Year Especially Favorable for Northern Lights

In 2024, there have been no shortages of northern lights! They are formed when solar winds (particles from the Sun) come into contact with the atmosphere.

From Earth, these halos of pink, purple, green, and blue light have appeared several times in the French sky between May and October 2024. Many French regions have enjoyed this experience: on the Côte d'Azur, in Auvergne, Alsace, and even in Brittany, fabulous northern lights have been spotted. Will we have the chance to admire more this winter? For now, the mystery remains, but one thing is certain, we'll be on the lookout.
