While some scientists are working to find the key to make humans live in space, others are busy establishing plans to allow them to live underwater. This is particularly the goal of the Deep project, led by a private investor whose identity has not been revealed, currently being tested in the British city of Chepstow

Establishing a "permanent human presence" in the ocean

Living, working, conducting scientific research... Maybe soon, all of this will be possible underwater. With Deep, the project's leaders aim to establish a permanent [underwater] presence by 2027. This giant submarine would be submerged at 200 meters deep. Initially, people could stay there for 28 consecutive days, with the idea of extending these durations to a month or even more in the future. The goal is to live in the ocean forever. To have permanent human facilities in all the oceans of the world.

», says Mike Shackleford, the project’s operations manager, to the Guardian

Enabling the Development of Scientific Knowledge about the Ocean

In addition to providing an aquatic dimension to human life, the project also highlights the opportunity to « deepen our understanding of the ocean and its critical role for humanity  ».

», one of the collaborators of the Deep project at Guardian states. « You would be shocked by how little we know about the ocean, so someone has to take the first steps to try to build the technology that will allow us to dive down and study the ocean in situ », adds Mike Shackleford.

Deep undoubtedly follows in the footsteps of the Continental Shelf project, initiated by Jacques Cousteau in the 1960s. This 5-meter long by 2.5-meter wide steel cylinder was submerged at a depth of ten meters off the coast of Marseille, but it eventually was abandoned. Will this project succeed this time? Only time will tell, but the construction already well underway of this submarine suggests that our daily lives could indeed take place under the ocean.

;an very soon.
