It's urgent to make things happen before we reach the point of no return. On Thursday, October 24, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) published a new report that is even more alarming than its predecessors. This report states that the 1.5 degrees target set by the Paris Agreement in 2015 to try to limit temperature rises may soon no longer be valid as climate change continues to gain ground. « The time has come to face the climate crisis », says Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP.
As #ClimateChange promotes fire-favorable weather, climate-driven wildfires in extratropical forests have overtaken tropical forests as the leading source of global fire emissions, researchers report in Science. https://t.co/H1KKJctAJS pic.twitter.com/xn8byMFFgL

A Call for Commitment from All Nations
With just a few days to go before the COP29 taking place in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22, the stakes are high. « We need a global mobilization on an unprecedented scale and pace, and we need it now, before the next series of climate commitments », continues Inger Andersen. According to the report, it seems impossible to keep the target of 1.5 degrees.
Without immediate action, temperature rise could reach nearly 3 degrees. The report states that there is « over a 15% chance that warming will exceed +2.5°C by the end of the century
» The only solution would be for all nations to commit to reducing their annual CO2 emissions by 42% by 2030, and by 57% by 2035. « To have a chance of limiting global warming to +1.5°C, we have eight years to cut greenhouse gas emissions by nearly half », the report emphasizes.
COP16 to find solutions against the extinction of multiple tree species
Meanwhile, negotiations are currently underway in Cali, Colombia, where the 16th World Conference on Biodiversity (COP16) is taking place. The main concern: more than one in three tree species is threatened with extinction, as highlighted by Le Monde. Human activities and climate change are leading to the gradual and accelerated destruction of biodiversity. Yet, trees play a major role in the balance of ecosystems and the life of communities. The goal of this conference would be for the 200 participating countries to strengthen their commitments to nature by November 1st.
