It took more than 2 months for the good news to be shared with the whole world. Back in June, the Menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes welcomed two new little residents who are absolutely adorable: baby red pandas. This is excellent news for this threatened species, as there hadn't been any births for these animals in over 12 years, since 2013.
A great reason to visit the 5th
If it took this long for the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) to announce the wonderful news, it's simply because, until now, the two little furballs stayed with their mom, who carried them from one hiding spot to another to protect them, as is customary when pandas give birth.roux. However, for the past few days, they have gained independence and are now leaving their nest to be seen by the adoring eyes of the general public. A first check-up has been conducted, revealing the good health of the two animals. They will continue to be monitored throughout the autumn to ensure their growth.

The MNHN, a peaceful haven for animals
This good news, besides giving us a little comfort during this gloomy back-to-school season, also reflects the commitment of the MNHN, which tirelessly works to protect endangered species. Indeed, due to deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and poaching, the red panda is classified as « Endangered ». There are said to be less than 10,000 individuals left in the forests of the Himalayas and southwestern China, according to the Ménagerie.

These births carry a whole symbol of hope. Even more so, as they add to other happy events that have happened at the Jardin des Plantes this year, with the arrival of Edwards' pheasants, classified as « Critically endangered », a nene goose, a type of Hawaiian goose that is also threatened, and corsac foxes, which, although not currently at high risk, are still being monitored because they are classified as « Minor concern ».
