We don’t know about you, but here at Bonbon, we absolutely love bookstores. First off, because you can find some extraordinary items called books. And secondly, because for some of them, these places are pretty magical. With huge shelves packed with books from floor to ceiling, wooden stairs that creak underfoot, and hidden nooks where you could easily spend hours devouring a good book, they are like little paradises. And the good news is that these places can be found all over the planet, even right in the heart of the capital!
A historic and emblematic bookstore
In Paris, for tourists, there are a few must-see spots that you absolutely have to check out. Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Cœur, and the Arc de Triomphe. And perhaps a bit more surprisingly...
This English bookstore Shakespeare and Co is located on the riverbanks in the 5th district. Since its opening in 1951 by George Whitman, this place has truly become a mythical spot in the capital!

A place that seems completely unaffected by the passing of time, at the crossroads between a magical maze and a backdrop straight out of Alice in Wonderland. With a bohemian and intimate atmosphere, an astonishing number of references, and regular cultural events, this one-of-a-kind bookstore has managed to rank 7th among the most popular places in the world, standing out among the 99 other establishments in competition.
Addresses Around the World
To create this ranking, the experts at Preply looked into 100 bookstores worldwide, cross-referencing Google and TripAdvisor reviews, e.has thus established an average rating. And the least we can say is that the winners are diverse, and above all well distributed across the continents. In first place, we find Daunt Books in London, a place famous for its Haussmannian architecture, its woodwork, its balconies, and its impressive skylight.

It is followed by El Ateneo Grand Splendid in Buenos Aires, a majestic bookstore located in an old theater, which has preserved the original balconies and the sumptuous red velvet curtain. In third place, we have the State Library Victoria in Melbourne, which stands out thanks to the La Trobe Reading Room, a spectacular octagonal space topped with a huge dome that floods the room with light.
In the rest of the top 12 established by Preply, you'll find the Bookstore Dominicanen in Maastricht, the Starfield Library in Seoul, the bookstore at Trinity College in Dublin, and also the famous Livraria Lello in Porto.
o, attracting dozens and dozens of tourists every day who come to admire its double spiral staircase.
