Attention, sensitive souls, refrain. On January 4th, The Circle of Snow arrived on Netflix, the adaptation of a true story as brutal as it is fascinating: the crash of an airplane in the Andes, and the extreme struggle of the survivors to make it out alive.

An ef(freezing)yable story

Friday, October 13, 1972, 45 passengers and crew members of a Uruguayan flight bound for Chile find themselves lost in the heart of the Andes, following the crash of their plane. They (passengers) then find themselves stranded in the mountains without food, facing unimaginable temperatures. Only 16 people will survive, after being reduced to a survival technique that seems unthinkable to us: cannibalism. A true story brilliantly portrayed in the brand new Netflix production.

An Outstanding Performance

It's very simple, the movie completely moved us. At the office, we all shed a tear, or almost all of us. The movie is masterfully conducted by the (young) cast, who manages to make us feel all the suffering, all the pain, all the dilemmas and sacrifices as if we were there.

The plane crash and the scenes of avalanches, of an unmatched violence, will probably traumatize us for a long time, but at no moment does the movie fall into an over-dramatization, or tries to sensationalize, which would clearly be inappropriate.

Speaking aesthetically, it is an absolute success as well. The colors are superb, the shots are incredibly well designed, and the mountains have never seemed so beautiful and menacing at the same time. We are captivated by this raw yet powerful story, and the play of light and shadow only highlight the strength and poetry of the few hopeful moments in the film.

Finally, death and cannibalism, central and yet thorny subjects of the film, are treated with exceptional dignity, paying tribute to all the victims of this tragedy, as well as the survivors, who live each day burdened with the weight of this extraordinary ordeal.

To sum up, it's an incredibly hopeful and resilient message. We won't dwell on the subject too long, as we might start crying really loudly again, and we already had a hard time stopping the first time. One thing's for sure, it's a movie to see for its lesson in humanity, its beauty, and the torrent of emotions it provides.

P.S.: For those who might need moral support after watching, don't hesitate, we're here for you.
