This is a truly living institution nestled in the heights of eastern Paris. At Vieux Belleville, they nurture a rare spirit: that of the popular bistro where people come as much to eat as to share.
At the helm since 1994, Joseph Pantaleo has shaped this place in his image, inspired by the Belleville of his childhood. A former chef at Maxim’s and a catering expert at Potel et Chabot, he has managed to combine culinary excellence with a warm, no-frills atmosphere. His bet? To blend traditional French cuisine with popular songs. This intuition has become his signature, recognized even by the City of Paris, which awarded him a medal for his contribution to the cultural vibrancy of the capital.

Here, everything is a song (even dessert)
As night falls, the place transforms. The tables fill up, the lights dim... and the first notes resonate. Accordion, barrel organ, soulful voices: almost every night, house artists bring the popular repertoire back to life.
On Tuesdays, we celebrate Édith Piaf, a child of the neighborhood, reimagined with passion. On other evenings, we encounter the joyful spirits of Fréhel, Mistinguett, or Maurice Chevalier. A delightful twist: here, the audience participates. The lyrics go around, the voices rise, and everyone becomes, for the duration of a chorus, a true Parisian.

Far from the stiff folklore of some Montmartre cabarets, Vieux Belleville proudly embraces a warm authenticity. The artists aren’t just playing a role: they are keeping a living memory alive.
Belleville, the beating heart of a vibrant Paris
Since the 90s, this musical bistro has been a true gem. While the capital changes, it remains a stronghold of post-war chanson, from “La Java bleue” to the timeless tunes of old Paris.
