Perhaps you've already passed by, associating it with the many Parisian brasseries where white tablecloths, velvet banquettes, and gilded accents are the norm. Maybe you've dined there, enjoyed lunch, or simply stayed for a quick coffee. If so, you must have appreciated the elegance of this Art Deco establishment, which has stood the test of time without losing its charm. Since 1927, La Coupole has been a beacon in the Montparnasse neighborhood. A gathering place for Parisians, artists, and writers, this nearly century-old restaurant continues to cradle Paris, generation after generation.

Between Champagne and Celebrations

The story of La Coupole begins with two Auvergnats, René Lafon and Ernest Fraux. The latter, already the owner of the Dôme, takes on the crazy challenge of investing in an old wood depot to create one of the most iconic brasseries in the capital, alongside his brother-in-law. And they succeeded! With the best craftsmen and architects in their contact list, they brought to life a place where warmth and friendliness reign

One of the most memorable moments for the restaurant? Its grand opening. On December 20, 1927, La Coupole opens its doors for the very first time, hosting an evening fit for the grandest of celebrations at Gatsby. Welcoming around 2500 guests, it quickly becomes one of the hottest party spots in the capital, but faces a “dramatic” shortage: the 1500 bottles of champagne originally planned just aren't enough! Let’s just say, the excitement was in the air.

As Lively as It Was a Hundred Years Ago

Quickly, La Coupole attracts the crème de la crème of the artistic and literary world: Cocteau, Dali, Picasso, Sartre, De Beauvoir, Colette and many others have graced these wooden tables. In the basement where a dancing space awaits, Josephine Baker sends souls soaring with her movements while the trendiest blues and jazz musicians conquer Paris with their catchy and rhythmic tunes.

Today, not much has changed. The saxophones and double basses have made way for DJ turntables that continue to make the restaurant vibrate just like its very first day. Here, you can enjoy delicious seafood and uTraditional French cuisine, specifically a lamb curry like no other. From its decor to its atmosphere, and of course its gastronomy, La Coupole tells us a little piece of history. In fact, it was listed as a historical monument in 1988, and that's no coincidence. Now you'll know where to go to delight your taste buds and enjoy a lovely story.

Get ready for its centenary, this time, there will definitely be plenty of champagne bottles!
