The Editor

For those wondering if antique furniture still pleases, the exhibition "Les Alienés" provides a clear answer. After a more than successful first edition in 2022, the Mobilier National has once again given carte blanche to 39 contemporary creators to reinterpret, according to their sensibilities, antique furniture devoid of heritage value so that it can reintegrate the institution's collection. Resurrected treasures from the past to feast your eyes on until January 7th. How sweet it is to rediscover gems from the Mobilier National! And even more so when the exhibition highlights upcycling, which has never been more popular. Created by Louis XIV and Colbert in 1604, the Mobilier National is a place of conservation and creation that aims to furnish official buildings of the Republic, promote contemporary creation, and ensure the restoration and maintenance of a collection of over 130,000 objects. Unfortunately, .Every year, the National Furniture separates from pieces - objects that have not been used for a long time - they accumulate, so it gets rid of those who have lost their interest. Instead of destroying them, a new upcycling collection gives a second life to these rejected furniture. Transformed and revisited by visionary artists, they become unique pieces combining the richness of the past and the present. Desks, sculptures, benches, screens... all these timeless objects are given a new youth. Valentine Huyghues Despointes gives vibrant colors to a desk, Mattia Bonetti makes a table shine, Alexandre Jeanson dresses a chandelier with hair, Valérie Colas des Francs colors a bedside table... DanIn an innovative and ecological approach, the exhibition "Les Aliénés" proves that we should never forget about old dusty furniture left in a corner. By taking on this creative challenge, the artists open up a unique universe to us, reminding us that anything is possible. With this exhibition, the Mobilier national also wants to question the virtues of circular economy and draw attention to the lack of consideration for the ancient materials of these environmentally friendly furniture; a fresh coat of paint, and off we go! To do this, the Mobilier national has renewed its partnership with the house J.M. Weston, both institutions sharing this heritage approach and this fidelity to know-how that is expressed here through acts of creation and revaluation of great modernity.© Maud Leprêtre
