The Editor

If the name Robert Doisneau is famous around the world, we too often tend to simplify the photographer's work to just one image, that of the legendary Kiss by the City Hall. However, his work is far, very far from being summed up by this one piece, as the man whose only aim was to capture the poetry of the present moment left behind hundreds and hundreds of photographs (more than 450,000 to be precise). An immense collection of life slices, which will be showcased at the Maillol Museum starting April 17, 2025.

Celebrating over 50 years of creation

For 6 months, there will be more than 300 photographs (in color and black and white), archives, and personal belongings featured.

In the halls of the Maillol museum, we get the chance to dive into the intimacy of Robert Doisneau's creative genius. Through a rich chronological journey, the institution invites us to trace a diverse and prolific career, from the early 1930s to the end of the 1980s.

From his strolls in the suburbs of Paris to his years in the world of fashion and luxury at Vogue, and including the artist studios he frequented (including Aristide Maillol), the exhibition invites us to become aware of the full extent of his palette – or rather his film. A truly delightful walk through the work of this photographer with a unique sensitivity.

The Poetry of the 20th Century

Through his snapshots, Robert Doisneau becomes a witness to his era, marked notably by the Second World War, but also to a much more significant everyday history in his eyes. Thanks to a vision that embodies almost childlike carefreeness,...

He champions the simplicity of life, the poetry that can be found in the most insignificant details of an ordinary day. The Maillol Museum invites us to dive into a playful, simple Paris, revealing the truth of the artist, the everyday where beauty can take many forms, and often hides where we least expect it
