Beyond the myth of the American dream
In a more than tense American political context, the Maillol museum has chosen to offer a retrospective of Andres Serrano's work. As we approach the elections that will place a 47th president at the helm of one of the world's greatest powers in November 2024, the exhibition allows a dive into the heart of the history of a fragmented society. A journey beyond time and borders, inviting us to discover the United States under a realistic, sometimes even subversive and provocative prism, going against the somewhat outdated myth of the "American dream."

Putting society into images
In this exhibition, there are no less than 89 works divided into 10 chapters on display. Among them, the artist's greatest series, created between the late 80s and 2019, are presented through a specially designed scenography to let the vibrant colors of the photographs shine under the light. Through his shots, Andres Serrano manages to give a voice to those who didn't have one, fight against racial and sexist prejudices, and also question death and religion.

With Nomads (1990), he explores marginality, the life of the homeless, the daily struggles of those who believed in the promised land of the country, but could never reach it. Through The Klan (1990), he invites us to see beyond the hoods of the white supremacists from the Ku Klux Klan. On a completely different level, in 2004, he captures the portrait of a New York billionaire who is just beginning his conquest of America, with Donald Trump (America) (2004). This series is even more relevant as it resonates with the situation of American society twenty years later.
