The capital is bursting with amazing places that will surprise you at every turn. Nestled in the heart of the Jardin de Pré Catelan, within the Bois de Boulogne, lies an open-air theater. Far away from the hundreds of performance venues that keep the corners of Paris alive, here, the plays are performed outdoors, in a unique and lush setting. Let us show you around this hidden gem!

A theater with a history over a century old

Imagine finding right in the middle of a park, a hundred-year-old oak surrounded by a 22-meter stage that can host up to 240 spectators. Head to the western part of Paris, to discover a seasonal theater, with a rich and eclectic lineup, blending theater, dance, music, and even readings. Here, audiences of all ages and all artists are welcome, young or old, amateur or professional.

The story of this theater began in 1855 when Nestor Roqueplan created an amusement park where a certain “Theater of Flowers” played the main role. The greatest artists performed here, such as Claude Debussy.

example. It was only a century later, in 1952, under the guidance of the chief curator of the gardens of Paris, Robert Joffet, that the Theatre aux Fleurs became the Shakespeare Garden. The plants that adorn it are inspired by the works of the famous playwright.

A program designed for both adults and children

Until September, a program combining exhibitions and performances brings joy to people of all ages. You can find Pier Sparta's wooden sculptures arranged in the garden, available for everyone to enjoy. On the theater side, don't miss Shakespeare Love, which draws inspiration from Shakespeare's female characters, immersing us in the everyday life of Carmen, an actress facing numerous challenges. The famous play by the English playwright, The Tempest, will also be performed outdoors throughout the summer. In September, the Verdure Theater Troop will take you on a journey through the Little Secret History of the Bois de Boulogne, a fun show suitable for ages 8 and up. Feel free to check out full programming to discover the wonders that the Théâtre de Verdure has in store for you!
