The Editor

Two hundred years ago, Nicéphore Niépce, a French engineer, invented photography. Two centuries later, this process of instant immortalization has become commonplace in our lives, from selfies to stories. Since this Wednesday, October 7th, the Bourse de Commerce invites us to revisit the stakes of this practice, through a unique presentation of over 700 photographs from its collections, bringing together some of the greatest names in art history.

Photography in All Its Glory

To kick off this unique retrospective, the Bourse de Commerce returns to a central theme of photography : the eye. That of the artist first, who brings a vision of the world to life. That of the model, who looks back at us and tra

Receives a message. And that of the spectator finally, without whom this art could not exist. An introductory theme, which acts as a guiding thread throughout the exhibition.

And to say the least, this latest one kicks off in grand style, with a monumental installation by Barbara Kruger — which actually gives its name to this retrospective — located in the rotunda. Quite paradoxically without any photography, it offers us a reflection on the gaze, on presence and on humanity, that will leave no one indifferent.

Artists in the Spotlight

We continue just next door in a massive gallery dedicated to Irving Penn. In total, no fewer than 450 prints are on display, from floor to ceiling. A unique staging that plunges us into the photographer's imagination, blending his fashion photos, his celebrity portraits, his still lifes, his nudes and his representations of "humble trades." A real medley

c;le fantastic and captivating.

On the first floor, it's then Raymond Depardon who takes center stage with prints from his France series. A celebration of these small towns like no other, neither quite urban nor quite rural, presented in a remarkably poetic way. Here, the images float through the air, offering us their vibrant colors and their wild humanity as we wander through.

A unique and poetic presentation

After these highlights, the Bourse de Commerce immerses us in a broader retrospective of photography, revisiting the great themes that inspire the medium. Room after room, we discover the work of Man Ray, Annie Leibovitz, Erwin Blumenfeld, Dora Maar, Robert Capa, Lee Miller and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Each print explores the body, the gaze, repetition, colors, layering in a simply hypnotic collection. A tapestry as diverse as it is poetic, offering us a free journey through the unique world of photography. An exceptional exhibition not to be missed.
