The Editor

The first impressionist woman is honored from October 18, 2023, to March 3, 2024, at the Marmottan Monet Museum. In total, you can discover 66 artworks from French and foreign museums, gathered for the first time around Berthe Morisot and the art of the 18th century.

This exhibition highlights the connections between the artist and some of her predecessors such as Antoine Watteau, François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and Jean-Baptiste Perronneau. It also relies on unpublished sources: correspondences, notebooks of Berthe Morisot and her husband Eugène Manet (and their circle of friends), press clippings... and an in-depth genealogical study. A first!

Triumphant Impressionism of Berthe Morisot

The exhibition opens with one of Berthe Morisot's most emblematic works, "At the Ball," featuring a Parisian figure in a ball gown and a fan adorned with a gallant scene. Perfect to kick off the festivities.A section focused on the daily life of the beautiful and high bourgeoisie world to which the artist belongs. All mixed with the importance of art in the 18th century, especially with the portrait of Tiburce Morisot (father of Berthe) who played an important role in the creation of museums in Limoges. [Image] The next part focuses on Morisot's triumphant impressionism, organized around detail, with works like "Venus Asks Vulcan for Weapons," the only painting by the artist that she hangs in her interior and lives with. There are also recognized works like "Woman at Her Dressing Table," "Young Woman in Ball Gown," "Young Woman on a Divan"... Pieces that depict Parisian life and reflect the artist's penchant for light colors and the conception of femininity beauty. Morisot and her predecessors

Within the Marmottan Monet Museum, as we continue to explore its exhibits, we come across an entire section dedicated to Fragonard, showcased on one of his iconic paintings, "The Music Lesson" (on loan from the Louvre Museum). This section unveils dominant brown-pink tones and expresses a connection with Berthe Morisot's use of pastels, establishing a harmonious color palette with her canvas paintings.

Apollon revealing his divinity to the shepherdess Issé, Berthe Morisot.

The end of the exhibition partially evokes the mourning of her husband. The artist turns to the works of François Boucher, which she copies, such as Apollon revealing his divinity to the shepherdess Issé. Both paintings are present in the exhibition and bear witness to the sensitivity of each artist.
