Dedicated to the transmission of the work and history of Serge Gainsbourg, the Maison Gainsbourg is a cultural institution not to be missed this autumn. Located in the 7th arrondissement, rue de Verneuil, the former house of the singer opened its doors this Wednesday, September 20th. Visitors can discover the mythical living space of the artist and, across the street, a museum full of surprises.

Last Sunday, on April 2nd, the loved ones of Serge Gainsbourg announced the long-awaited opening of the Maison Gainsbourg to the public. This is the place where he lived with Jane Birkin and their daughter, Charlotte, until his passing in 1991. The chosen date is quite symbolic since Serge Gainsbourg was born on April 2nd, 1928. He would have turned 95 years old this year.


« A music room, a brothel, a museum... »

In April 1979, during the TV show "L'invité du jeudi", Serge Gainsbourg described his house as « a sitting-room, a music room, a brothel, a museum... » : basically, a space that is difficult to define. A true pilgrimage site for fans of the singer of the famous song "Je t'aime moi non plus", everyone dreamed of discovering the immense number of musical instruments, souvenirs, and trinkets collected by the artist. And it is Charlotte, also an actress and singer, who expressed herself with emotion in a communication transmitted to AFP, " very happy and touched to announce the opening of Maison Gainsbourg ".  


An "intimate" journey in two sites

Why settle for visiting just a house when you can also enjoy a richly endowed museum? Charlotte Gainsbourg explains that the journey "starts with a visit to the House at 5 bis, rue de Verneuil, a dive into the intimate. Then, just a stone's throw away, at 14, rue de Verneuil, the Museum will showcase my father's life through his works and his collection of iconic pieces ".


Giving a new listen to his work

According to Charlotte's words, this unique place offers the public a experience that may give a new listen to his work. "L'homme à la tête de chou" lived at 5 bis for 22 years, and the interior of his house has remained intact since his disappearance. In addition to a museum depicting the life and career of the artist, number 14 will also offer a bookstore-boutique and the Gainsbarre, a café and piano bar.

The Maison Gainsbourg hopes to welcome nearly 100,000 visitors per year and also offers on-site, digital, and off-site cultural programming, according to its officials.
