It's a phenomenon that has exploded in recent years: Korean beauty seems to have become the holy grail when it comes to cosmetics. More holistic, it promotes an aesthetic that goes beyond just being a beauty product, almost becoming a way of life on its own. And more than just a trend popularized by social media, the success of Korean beauty is the result of decades of history and traditions. It’s on this evolution, from the 18th century to today, that the National Museum of Asian Arts - Guimet focuses as part of its new exhibition K-Beauty. Korean beauty, the story of a phenomenon, running from March 18 to July 6, 2026.
Three centuries of inspiration and evolution
Through paintings, photos, advertisements, dresses, and beauty accessories, the Guimet Museum reveals and analyzes the many codes that govern the realms of beauty and appearances, starting from the 18th century.

At that time, a very specific aesthetic was in vogue. People favored very fair skin, flowing clothing, as well as refined makeup and hairstyles. Beauty was then in tune with inner harmony and balance. While maintaining its traditional aspect, Korean beauty gradually saw new codes emerging, particularly influenced by foreign elements. Aesthetic power but also economic, a blend of tradition and modernity... This K-Beauty is gaining ground, driven by cinema, literature, and the m...ode and, of course, K-Pop.
France - Korea, a long-standing story
The choice of this exhibition theme is no coincidence. In 2026, France will celebrate the 140th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with Korea. Throughout the year, the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts will offer a program related to the Land of the Morning Calm. In addition to the exhibition on K-Beauty, there will be an exhibition on Korean royal treasures from May 20 to August 31, 2026, and another dedicated to trompe-l'œil techniques running from September 16, 2026, to January 4, 2027.
