"Being Johnny Hallyday is a job," the singer confessed in an interview with Télérama on April 2, 2014; the exhibition that honors him at Paris Expo could not have better illustrated the eclecticism of the character. During a chrono-thematic stroll, fans and curious individuals are immersed in his universe and the immensity of his talent. "We have included a thousand and one details, so that visitors understand the extent of who he was," says Benoît Réminche, the exhibition curator. Two years of work, 200 people to imagine it, 50 to set it up, 16 semi-trailers to transport it: nothing was too extravagant to represent him, he himself knew it.

A Stage Monster

You take care of your entrance and your exit from the stage, and between the two, you figure it out.” This advice from Maurice Chevalier was followed to the letter by Johnny Hallyday throughout his career and every show. Yes, this exhibition is above all about Johnny on stage: a colossal archival work has been undertaken to gather photographs, album covers, concert excerpts and show how much the man lived through his performances.

According to Benoît Rémiche, the risk of such an initiative was that it would be “up to par with Johnny”. Fortunately, to reproduce the spirit of his art and the strength of his character, the organizers were able to rely on the best stage designers. One of them, Clémence Farell, explains that “music can touch very sensitive elements of the visitor”.

The path has thus.Summer is meant to be like the backstage of one of his concerts, a 360-degree film where each of your steps is accompanied by the iconic music of the artist. The true connoisseurs can tap their feet to "Joue pas de rock'n'roll pour moi," while the more melancholic will fall in love with "Diego, libre dans sa tête," and the romantics will adore "Gabrielle." It's a multi-sensory experience that promises to take you on an emotional journey, especially since the voice of the audio guide is none other than that of actor Jean Reno, a close friend of Johnny and godfather to his daughter Jade. Johnny Hallyday also had hidden talents that were unknown to the French, who are familiar with him holding a microphone but not so much on a movie set. However, the man with a thousand lives had a true acting career. He was an actor, with 40 films and series to his name, a role in Godard's films, and even a rejected proposition from master Tarantino. To tell this lesser-known part of his life, there is an unprecedented intervention by Claude Lellouche, and the reconstruction of his cinema room in Marnes-la-Coquette. Laeticia Hallyday, his wife for 21 years, actively participated in the exhibition. She notably provided his stage costumes, jackets, and helmets, to present to the public the exceptional fashion collection of Johnny. Very touched by its realization, she specifies in a statement that she wanted to "bring his work to life", so that it continues to accompany his millions of fans and future generations. The narration of the event ends with his funeral, which brought together more than a million people in the streets of Paris. "He embodied something that went beyond being just a singer," wrote journalist Olivier Gilbert.p: The time has come to remind you of this timeless character.
