The Editor

She rocked our childhood and probably even that of our parents. Through her many adventures, Martine accompanied our early years. And guess what? In 2024, this character is celebrating her 70th birthday. An anniversary celebrated in style in Paris, as an exhibition dedicated entirely to her will take place from March 21 to April 11 at the Gallimard Gallery in partnership with Casterman editions.

70 years of beautiful stories

Let's take a trip down memory lane. Back in 1954, Marcel Marlier, illustrator, and Gilbert Delahaye, author and typographer, introduced us to Martine, a little girl with curiosity beyond measure and a perpetual smile. Martine goes on exciting adventures with her brothers Jean and Alain, and her trusty dachshund Patapouf, in the pages of the books.

Martine at the farm, at the beach, dressing up or as a ballet dancer... Between the years 1950 and 2015, the two authors published 60 books that were very popular: 120 million copies were sold in French, and 45 million in foreign languages.

An icon for the youth of yesterday and tomorrow

Like an icon, Martine has been there for entire generations, witnessing all the social changes over the years: technological advancements, evolution of education, women's rights...

Through this exhibition, the Gallimard Gallery invites you to take a trip down memory lane to (re)discover the countless stories we all loved, thanks to the original illustrations by Marcel Marlier. Even though both creators have passed away, Martine continues to inspire dreams for children both then and now. With Jean-Louis Marlier, Marcel Marlier's son, Martine now explores new places like Brittany, the beach, and more.
