The Editor

Like every year for the past 11 years, in January, the Bon Marché Rive Gauche opens its doors to an artist to transform its spaces into a true museum. After Prune Nourry, Daniel Buren and Ernesto Neto, this year, the Chinese artist Song Dong has taken on the exciting challenge of transforming the department store. The result is a colorful, eclectic exhibition that turns the place into a monumental ready-made, visible until February 22nd. To celebrate the end of the residency, the artist invites you to take part in one of these flagship installations: Eating the City.

A colorful and poetic exhibition

At the beginning of January, Song Dong took over the spaces of Bon Marché with an exhibition that will surely remind some of Marcel Duchamp's works. In the center of the store, huge white chandeliers adorned with blown glass bottles cascade down. It's an obvious tribute to the bottle rack of the aforementioned artist, which contrasts beautifully with the extremely colorful drapes that adorn the balconies.

Outside, the Bon Marché windows showcase a lovely collection of upcycled objects, mirrors, and lights, all arranged in a poetic display that reflects themes of recycling, memory, and time, which are dear to the artist. But it's on the second floor where the highlight of the exhibit lies, featuring two kaleidoscopic works that blend mirrors, windows, and lights, plunging us into a wondrous and dreamlike universe.

An Unprecedented Participatory Work

To celebrate the conclusion of this carte blanche, which will wrap up on February 22, Song Dong has decided to go big by inviting you to join in on a new edition of his project Eating the City. The concept is simple: from February 17 to 20, throughout the day, ...

You will be able to admire the artist and their team create an incredible imaginary city, which will take the shape of a mandala.

But beware, this perfect city will be entirely made with cookies and sweets. And just like at Song Dong, nothing goes to waste, so to combat food waste, he has the perfect solution: a collective tasting to properly enjoy this delicious city. So be careful, if you want to take a bite, you’ll need to shell out 40€, but that includes a glass of champagne, the exhibition catalog, and the pleasure of being part of a unique moment.
