If it doesn't ring a bell right away, his lush jungles and dreamy landscapes will surely speak to you. Nicknamed the « Customs Officer » because of his job as a customs employee in Paris, Henri Rousseau didn't fully dedicate himself to painting until he was 49 years old.
Originally from Mayenne, he taught himself, far from academies, and regularly exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Portraits of friends, landscapes created to make a living from his art, grand compositions full of mystery: Rousseau explores various genres with total freedom. Long considered a naive painter, he is now recognized for the radical uniqueness of his universe. It is therefore in tribute to this unique talent that the Orangerie Museum is dedicating a major exhibition to him from March 25 to July 20, 2026.

A Rare Exhibit Between Europe and the United States
Entitled The Ambition of Painting, the exhibit brings together around fifty works from Europe and the United States, some of which are being showcased for the very first time. Notably, it includes the exceptional loan from the Museum of Modern Art, The Sleeping Gypsy, which hasn't been presented in France for over forty years. Several paintings are on loan from the Barnes Foundation, which holds one of the most important collections dedicated to the artist.
This exceptional collaboration was made possible thanks to the recent change in the status of the American foundation, allowing it to loan certain works. It's the perfect opportunity to see in Paris some paintings that are usually kept away.

The Recognition from Collectors
The journey also highlights those who helped make Rousseau known. In Paris, the dealer Paul Guillaume champions his work. In the United States, the collector Albert C. Barnes acquires several of his paintings and contributes to his international recognition.

Highlight of the exhibition: The Sleeping Bohemian, loaned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A hypnotic canvas depicting a sleeping musician resting in a desert under the watchful gaze of a lion—this is the most emblematic image of the strange, poetic, and profoundly unique world of this eternal Rousseau.
