He is one of the great masters of Japanese animation. Alongside Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki, with whom he co-founded the famous Studio Ghibli in 1985, Isao Takahata distinguished himself as an internationally renowned director, producer, and screenwriter. Starting from October 15 and running until January 24, 2026, the Maison de la culture du Japon will host an exhibition dedicated to his creative genius and unique vision that revolutionized the world of animation.

An artist in a constant quest for novelty
He is known for Grave of the Fireflies in 1988, Pom Poko in 1994, My Neighbors the Yamadas in 1999, and also The Tale of the Princess Kaguya in 2013. Divided into four sections, the exhibition focuses not only on Isao Takahata's creative process but also on the works he created. In a constant pursuit of innovation, he continuously explores different horizons, like animated series for television, for example. A filmmaker but also a writer, he is the author of many works related to this universe.

An exhibition accompanied by a plethora of cultural events
While the exhibition will be open for more than three months, several events related to Isao Takahata will be organized alongside it. On October 14th at 6 PM, there will be an opening conference presented by Kazuyoshi Tanaka from Studio Ghibli and cultural mediator Ilan Nguyễn. Another conference titled “Takahata, the other giant of Ghibli” will take place on November 22nd at 3 PM, given by Catherine Cadou, a translator of Japanese films. Finally, on December 6th at 2:30 PM, the last conference “Thinking about nature and man with Isao Takahata” will be organized by Kenjirō Muramatsu, a lecturer in Lyon, and Antonin Bechler, a researcher at the French Institute of Research on Japan. All these conferences .are accessible with free entry, by reservation.
And when we talk about the master of animation, we're definitely talking about screenings! From October 21 to 31, Isao Takahata will have his retrospective with about ten feature films being screened. On November 22, following the conference, Pompoko will also be shown.
