The Editor

What could be more emblematic than Parisian bistros to describe the gastronomic culture of Paris? We love them for their conviviality, the social bond they create, and their boundary-less ambiance. They perfectly embody the radiant capital and immerse us in the authentic and indulgent Paris of yesteryear. In short, we have plenty of reasons to pay homage to them.

That's exactly what Pierre Josse and Pierrick Bourgault did with a photographic exhibition on the gates of l'Hôtel de Ville,“Au bonheur des bistrots”, which has been on display since April 19, 2023. For a month and a half, nearly 42 color and black-and-white photographs reveal the timeless charm, but also the extremely diverse personalities of these magical places, full of restrained emotions and assumed nostalgia.-

The bistro, a friendly and unpretentious place

At a time when trendy canteens are multiplying in the capital, Parisian bistros remain timeless and, above all, essential institutions. We love to have a coffee with colleagues, share a cheese and charcuterie platter, or enjoy a good traditional dish as we like it, all in a friendly and warm atmosphere. We are so fond of these places that the phrase "local bistro" has become part of the language of both the older and younger generations.

Editor-in-chief of the Routard Guides for almost 40 years, Pierre Josse knows the Parisian bistros well, as he has practically visited all of them. In love with their warmth, hospitality, and conviviality, he wanted to highlight these privileged places of encounter and exchange alongside Pierrick Bourgault, a writer and photographer, winner of the 2015 Grand Prize in Journalism for his reports in Iraq.
