It’s one of the legends of animated cinema: The Ice Age is making a comeback with a sixth movie soon! Since its first appearance in 2002, the saga has captured the hearts of generations of movie lovers with its amazing blend of humor, adventure, and nostalgia. Even though the magic has slowly faded due to a lack of inspiration from Blue Sky, the studio behind it, it’s impossible not to love its absolutely legendary cast of main animal characters. Long-time fans (like us) are super excited about the idea of a sequel: here’s what we know.

The Original Voices Are Back in the Cast

A lonely mammoth must return a baby to its tribe, and ends up teamed up with a bloodthirsty tiger and a sloth that truly lives up to its name. Becoming the best (or worst) friends in the world, this trio must face the melting ice caps. They then discover an underground world where dinosaures live. After that, they experience the drift of continents. And finally, they have to stop a meteorite to prevent the extinction of living species. All these adventures are well-known to every Gen Z member: The Ice Age has made its way through the 21st century with innovative stories and sharp one-liners, brought to life by Manny, Ellie, Diego, and the hilarious Sid. The same lovable characters will be back in the sixth film, although the storyline is still under wraps for now.

In the saga, we learn that Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, and Simon Pegg will indeed be part of the cast, providing their original voices. Gérard Lanvin, Élie Semoun, and Vincent Cassel will once again handle the French voiceover.

A Risky Bet for Disney

Since the release of the first film in 2002, the saga has generated over 3.2 billion dollars at the global box office, but it ultimately found itself weakened in the end, facing mixed reviews for its latest installments, especially Ice Age: Collision Course (2016). The 5th film only raked in 400 million dollars at the worldwide box office, a score that's half of what the previous films earned.

A tough blow for Blue Sky studio, which was ultimately rescued in 2021 by Disney: 20th Century Animation will have to handle Ice Age 6 and do better than the spin-off Ice Age: The Adventures of Buck Wild, which was released directly on Disney+ in 2022 and regarded as lacking interest by the audience. The theatrical release is scheduled for 2026, on a date still to be determined.
