Totoro, Chihiro, Ponyo at the cinema

If you grew up enchanted by Miyazaki's universe, blending grandiose music by Joe Hisaishi, quirky lovable characters, and magical imaginary landscapes, you will be thrilled to watch one of your favorite animations on the big screen. The retrospective kicks off on Friday, November 22, with a screening of Princess Mononoke at 8 PM, continues the next day with Ponyo on the Cliff at 4:45 PM, followed by Howl's Moving Castle at 7 PM – which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week! – and goes on with the neighbor we all wished we had, Totoro, on the 24th at 4 PM, culminating with Spirited Away the same day at 6 PM.

The marathon wraps up on November 25 at 8 PM with The Boy and the Heron, the latest from Ghibli and Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2024 that holds many secrets… so much so that a documentary has been created from scratch to unveil its behind-the-scenes.

The Boy and the Heron
under the spotlight

Yes, this retrospective is no coincidence: this week, Miyazaki is releasing an exclusive documentary that takes us through the creation process of his latest film, The Boy and the Heron. But be careful, time is tight: with a duration of two hours, it will only be shown in Parisian cinemas on November 21 and 22, as announced by the distributor Wild Bunch.

Entitled Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron and directed by Kaku Arakawa, this documentary has already aired on Japanese television and on the Max platform around the world; this screening marks its grand premiere in France. It comes a year after the release of the film in theaters, on November 1, 2023.
