Even flops deserve their time to shine: Under the Seine didn't charm French critics at all, but with 102 million views, it has become the second most-watched non-English film on Netflix. Is that enough to renew the experience? Some viewers could have done without it, but actress Bérénice Bejo, who plays the title role, confirmed to La Tribune Dimanche that a sequel to the shark film is in the works. Why not take the plunge and sink?

A different film « but still featuring a shark »
« In September 2025, we will shoot Under the Seine 2 », confirmed Bérénice Bejo during this lengthy interview. The globally known actress, famous since the success of The Artist, managed to share a few details about the theme of this new installment. « This won't just be a simple sequel. It's another film, very different... but still with a shark », she affirms. At the same time, how could you do without it?
A few days after the release of Under the Seine, a sequel was already hinted at by its director, Xavier Gens (Farang, Hostile). When asked by Variety, the French filmmaker stated that he wasn't working on it yet, but that discussions were underway.
will soon take place. He particularly explained that, if there were to be a sequel, it would take place "in a Paris completely submerged underwater." So yes, spoiler alert, this crazy imagery is exactly how the thriller ended, leaving us completely puzzled... But already more excited than at the beginning.Faut-il s'attendre à Sous la seine 2 ?

A Thrilling Final Cliffhanger
Released just before a summer marked by the 2024 Paris Olympics, the plot of this thriller was anything but trivial: envisioning the intrusion of a giant shark in the waters of the capital's river, Sous la Seine played on the rumor of a dangerous, dirty, inexperienced Paris. This was vividly showcased in one of its last scenes, where the team of marine biologists, unable to fend off the creature, helplessly witnessed the feast of the killer super-fish - Lilith, as it’s innocently named - during the triathlon event, which indeed took place in the Seine on Wednesday, July 31st. A scary yet ridiculous tooth from the Seine.
Then, the film wrapped up with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. In a close-up, we discovered the two heroes stranded…acute's et surrounded not by one, but by sharks in a Paris submerged by water after a series of chain explosions. Misunderstood work, assumed flop, both? At the time, we had made a choice. As grotesque as it was surprising, this ending was nonetheless granted a certain boldness, and now that a second installment is in the works, not to mention the excitement, we remain curious to see what comes next: will they dare to stage the cohabitation between Parisians and sharks?
