The biggest film festival in the world is getting ready to light up the Croisette for its 78th edition, from May 13 to 25, 2025. Several announcements have already informed the media and film lovers about the official selection, parallel sections, and the jury members... Le Bonbon summarizes everything for you in eight key points.
1. An unprecedented double poster
In terms of illustration, the organizers typically present symbolic posters, paying tribute to a filmmaker whose work resonates with the festival's history. This was the case in 2024 when a mystical scene from Rhapsody in August, created by the great Japanese master Akira Kurosawa, was chosen, showcased Out of Competition in 1991.
This year, however, the festival doubles the fun by offering not one, but two official posters. Featured prominently is the film A Man and a Woman by Claude Lelouch, the Palme d’Or winner in 1966, celebrating love. The poster captures, from both front and back, the scene where Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant celebrate their reunion with a heartfelt embrace. This hug has become iconic, perhaps “the most famous in cinema history”, say the organizers, who simply could not bear to separate them.

2. Laurent Laffitte, master of ceremonies
The 51-year-old actor, recently nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Césars with The Count of Monte Cristo, takes over from Camille Cottin. This will be his second time in the role, after previously hosting the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival nine years ago, in 2016. So, we can definitely expect him to be quite seasoned.

3. Juliette Binoche, president of the jury…
As we’ve known since February, after selecting American Greta Gerwig last year, the Cannes Film Festival is now looking to a French cinema icon to head the jury for its 78th edition. Starting on May 13, the director of Barbie will pass the baton to actress Juliette Binoche (The Lovers on the Bridge, the Three Colors trilogy, The English Patient).
A joyful nod to the long and rich career of the 60-year-old actress, who expressed her gratitude: “In 1985, I was stepping up the stairs for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress, I never imagined…”coming back, 40 years later, to this honorary role of jury president. I weigh the privilege, the responsibility and the absolute necessity of humility. »

4. … whose lineup has just been revealed
The task will be to watch and then judge the films competing in the official selection: the nine jury members – five women and four men – of the Cannes Film Festival were unveiled this Monday, April 28. Among the personalities…cute;s, we find the American actress Halle Berry, the Franco-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, the South Korean filmmaker Hong Sangsoo, the Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, the American comedian Jeremy Strong, the Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia (Grand Prix 2024 with All We Imagine as Light), the Mexican director Carlos Reygadas, and the documentary filmmaker from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Dieudo Hamadi.
After deciding which film will take home the sacred Palme d'Or, succeeding Anora by Sean Baker, the jury members, who come from all over the world, will also award the Grand Prix, the Jury Prize, the Best Screenplay Award, as well as the Best Actress and Best Actor awards.

5. The Different Selections in Full
Official competition, Critics' Week, Directors' Fortnight, Un Certain Regard: there are a handful of selections at the Cannes Film Festival, and each has found its perfect fit. While listing the hundreds of selected films would be quite tedious, here are some that particularly catch our eye, starting with the official selection: Alpha by Julia Ducournau (who directed Titane, Palme d'Or 2021), La Petite Dernière by Hafsia Herzi (who just won the César for Best Actress for her role in Borgo), Les Aigles de la République by Tarik Saleh (The Cairo Conspiracy), Eddington by Ari Aster (who directed the excellent Hereditary), and Dossier 137 by Dominik Moll (in competition... we’re hoping for the Palme d’Or in 2022 with La Nuit du 12). It’s worth noting that this year, the official selection is dedicated to the memory of Émilie Dequenne, who recently passed away from cancer. She won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 for her role in Rosetta, which won the Palme d'Or from the Dardenne brothers.
Let’s also mention the debut feature film by French director Amélie Bonnin, Partir un jour, which will open the festival, Vie Privée by Rebecca Zlotowski (Out of Competition), and The Chronology of Water, the first film by Kristen Stewart included in the Un Certain Regard section.

6. Mylène Farmer as a Musical Guest
Will she be as iconic as Zaho de Sagazan with her electrifying rendition of "Modern Love" ? We don't know much about her performance, but Mylène Farmer, who rarely makes public appearances, will indeed perform at the Palais des Festivals during the opening ceremony of the Festival on May 13.

7. Honorary Palme d'Or for Robert De Niro
During this same opening ceremony, Robert De Niro will receive an Honorary Palme d'Or for his entire career, fourteen years after serving as the jury president in 2011. The 81-year-old actor is indeed a familiar face on the Croisette: the last time he walked the red carpet was in 2023 for the presentation of Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese. He follows in the footsteps of Meryl Streep, who received an Honorary Palme d'Or in 2024.

8. The Women in Motion Award for Nicole Kidman
For about ten years now, the prestigious festival has been awarding the Women in Motion Award to personalities who contribute to “evolving the role of women in cinema and society.” Nicole Kidman will receive the 10th trophy: “Role after role, and with the nuances, strengths, and cracks unique to each character, [Nicole Kidman] has embodied women who break free from constraints,” celebrated the festival's general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, in a statement. Recently, the 57-year-old actress starred in Babygirl, an erotic thriller where she plays a wealthy businesswoman embracing her deepest repressed desires, thus sweeping away the trend.paternalistic approach that only casts fifty-somethings in stereotypical roles (mothers, housewives), when they’re not outright excluded from filming sets.
