He was already the first in our hearts, but he just confirmed his international brilliance: the Grand Rex, a renowned spot for cinema in the capital and classified as a Historical Monument since 1981, has taken the top spot in the ranking of the most beautiful cinemas in the world by the British group Time Out. The establishment on Boulevard Poissonnière (2nd arrondissement) had already come close to first place five years ago when it was surpassed by the Pathé Tuschinski in Amsterdam. It's time for a comeback: this year, it finishes in second place.

Fruitful Renovations
If the Grand Rex has finally outshone its competitors in this prestigious ranking, it's thanks to the fresh vibrancy that its recent renovations have brought. « The Grand Rex is perhaps one of the most beloved cultural institutions in Paris, with its splash of color reminiscent of Times Square in the austere neighborhood of the Grands Boulevards, but it’s not a cinema that rests on its laurels », believes Time Out.

Indeed, to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2022, the old gentleman revealed “a newly restored façade in its original 1932 style with cream and, of course, champagne tones.” A design praised by the editorial team, who were also charmed by the famous rotating sign “Rex” placed on the roof of the cinema, describing it as “the beacon for film lovers all over the city.” So many compliments! The management of Grand Rex quickly reacted on X, applauding all the investments and events that make “this legendary place shine.”

Three other Parisian cinemas in the ranking
This ranking has greatly contributed to the shine of the capital's heritage by giving particularly honorable positions to three other cinemas. The Champo, an art and essay cinema on Rue des Écoles (5th), came in at 10th place, ahead of the MontmartreStudio 28 (18th), which finished in 25th place. The Panthéon cinema (5th), the oldest active cinema in the capital, finished in 37th place. Hooray !
