The fantastic comedy The Mask, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, could soon see a reboot... but under a few conditions. Cameron Diaz insists that Jim Carrey reprises his role, while he is waiting for a good script to land on his desk. 

The duo Jim Carrey-Cameron Diaz could very well reunite on screen for a new The Mask, or at least, that’s a possibility that doesn’t seem to bother either of them! We wouldn’t have bet on such ghosts from the past, as these Hollywood stars have both drifted away from the industry in recent years, but their recent return to the media spotlight has given both actors the chance to share their thoughts on a potential sequel to their former comedy.


A diva, a shy guy, and a mask 

Directed by Chuck Russel and adapted from Dark Horse comics, The Mask (1994) tells the story of Stanley Ipkiss (played by Jim Carrey), a gentle, reserved bank employee who’s a bit pushed around by life. One day, through a quirky twist of fate, he discovers an ancient mask that possesses supernatural powers. When he puts it on, Stanley transforms into a colorful and extravagant character who can defy the laws of physics.

Under the influence of the mask, he becomes a more amplified and uncontrollable version of himself, unleashing his imagination and repressed desires. This new identity gives him the confidence he’s never had, especially to try to charm Tina Carlyle, a magnetic nightclub singer played by Cameron Diaz in her breakout film role.


« If Jim is on board » 

After an incredibly long break from her career – 11 years, can you believe it?! – Cameron Diaz has recently made her big comeback on Netflix in the movie Back in Action. During an interview with Access Hollywood as part of her promotion, she shared her thoughts on the future of The Mask 2.0, stating that she is « open » to it, but only if Jim Carrey is also « on board. I’ve been following his lead since day one! », she exclaimed in the interview published on January 17.

It's a glimmer of hope for fans of The Mask. In an interview with Comicbook, the actor mentioned the possibility of reprising his iconic role, as long as a solid and original project comes along. “It's really not a matter of money,” he said, adding mischievously, “I'm joking about the money... But you never know. You can't be sure.”

It’s a response that's both enigmatic and filled with humor, sparking new rumors on social media, where speculation is running wild. For now, no official sequel has been confirmed, but fans remain hopeful to see Carrey don the legendary green mask once again...
