Bistronomia, the highly anticipated new series of the fall, offers a delicious dive into the elite culinary world of Paris. Created by Marie-Sophie Chambon, Judith Havas, and Camille Pierrard, it explores the backstage of a scene that's as fascinating as it is brutal. Available starting September 25 on france.tv, the series will then have a prime time broadcast on France 2, delighting both food enthusiasts and fans of bold fiction.

A youth in search of freedom behind the stove

Nine episodes of around thirty minutes each for a first season that immerses us in the demanding universe of high-end dining in Paris in the early 2000s. In Bistronomia, we follow a trio of passionate twenty-somethings with dreams of Michelin stars and desires for emancipation. Johanna (Yowa-Angélys Tshikaya), a brilliant chef, faces challenges that...

acute; to racism and class barriers ; Amandine (Louise Labeque), heir to a name already respected ; and Vivian (Édouard Sulpice), an aspiring culinary critic stuck behind his bar, are each seeking their place. Together, they struggle in an elitist environment that chases after stars, dominated by patriarchal violence, and dream of a kitchen revolution : a cuisine that's freer, fairer, and accessible to everyone.

Amid clanging pots, steaming vapors, and brigade shouts, the series captures the intensity of a kitchen where everything flows at a frenetic pace, only to pause in the calm of meticulously arranged dishes and impeccable service. The close-ups reveal the precision of movements, the tension in glances, and the collective energy. Off duty, we find the characters in local bars and bistros, where conversations continue around French culinary culture, blending passion with disillusionment.

A realistic immersion into the heart of Parisian kitchens

Thoughtfully crafted with attention to detail, the series draws on about twenty interviews with chefs, alongside hundreds of hours of documentation and footage. Directed by Marine Bidaud and Alexandre Cammas, every aspect has been fine-tuned to stay as true as possible to the reality of high-end kitchens in Paris. The presence of chef Yves Camdeborde adds to the authenticity of it all.

On set, it reinforced this quest for authenticity, ensuring a truly immersive and credible experience in this bubbling environment.

The result? Bistronomia brilliantly mixes culinary drama with social issues: normalized racism, sexism, hierarchical violence, and physical and emotional wounds. In a world where verbal abuse and bullying hide behind high expectations, the series dare to show the flaws. With its relentless pace, heart-pounding close-ups, and intense kitchen scenes, some might even see it as a French version of The Bear, deeply rooted in the Parisian realities.
