Pandora, its floating cliffs, its majestic Leonopteryx, and the brave Na’Vi soaring through the skies to ride them. Unforgettable imaginary elements, the secret sauce behind the success of Avatar in 2009, are glimpsed in just a few images from the trailer for the third installment. On July 28, Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes was unveiled in a long trailer, shown both on social media and in movie theaters. For three minutes, the depth of the storyline, previously hidden, takes a backseat to spectacular visuals, hinting at a new adventure that we can dream about starting on December 17th.

All Fire

tout fade

This author had the privilege of discovering the most anticipated trailer of the summer, sweetly nestled in a red armchair, before the screening of Eddington. First reaction: hooray, the visual effects are stunning once again, the sea is a breathtaking azure blue, and the animals that inhabit it have a purity that could bring tears to your eyes, while around them, the lands scarred by flames signal new explosive confrontations. In short, the universe of Avatar is a limitless artistic well that's always a joy to dive back into.

And what next? What will this new 3h12 (!!!) film offer us plot-wise to finally move forward in the story? The story of the Sullys? The characters are the same and seem to follow the same narrative thread: Kiri discovers the depth of her connection with Eywa, Neteyam (Jake's son) and Tsireya (daughter of the Metkayina clan leaders) live their romance, Jake Sully still comes off as quite paternalistic, stifling the spirit of his wife, Neytiri, which we lamented in the previous installment. In short, it’s beautiful, it’s intense, and that’s pretty much it.

Some Exciting News

The storyline, cleverly hidden for now, hints at the emergence of a new tribe of Na’Vi, the People of the Ashes, thriving in a volcanic environment, which promises some stunning eruptions to enjoy through our 3D glasses. Another silver lining: the presence of Oona Chaplin (seen and loved in Game of Thrones) playing a badass and hostile clan leader. Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter will share the screen with the now-iconic stars of the saga: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, and Kate Winslet. A five-star cast for a film we hope will score just as high on Letterboxd, though we’re not too sure about it!
