Libre
, by Mélanie Laurent (2024)

Exactly a year ago, we included in our top films and series Voleuses, a feminist, light-hearted, good vibe take on Mission: Impossible, the seventh feature film by Mélanie Laurent; just when we thought we could take a breath, the actress-director is already releasing a new film, this time on Prime (which also features her stunning Bal des Folles). Libre is a biopic about Bruno Sulak (played by Lucas Bravo), the famous French robber with a big heart from the 80s, known for his charming looks, non-violent methods, and repeated escape attempts. While the film struggles to delve into the mindset of the man it pays tribute to, Mélanie Laurent's vibrant touch is once again evident, and we just love the freshness of Léa Luce Busato, making her screen debut as his partner.Sulak.

Coming November 1st on Amazon Prime

The Zone of Interest
, by Jonathan Glazer (2024)

This is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and for good reason! With The Zone of Interest – Oscar 2024 nominee for Best International Film and Best Sound – Jonathan Glazer delivers a contemplative feature where the action (almost nonexistent) and dialogues serve merely as pretext. The viewer finds themselves in the same position as Hedwig Höss (Sandra Hüller), the wife of a Nazi whose home is adjacent to Auschwitz, and who doesn’t see, or perhaps no longer sees, the horror burning around her. Her daily life is like a... utre monde. She takes care of her garden. She supervises her servants, some of whom are prisoners from the extermination camp. The children sometimes bathe in a nearby stream. Only the smoke, the barbed wire, or the watchtowers that surround her occasionally remind her of the horror of the nearby concentration camp, without it ever being shown or mentioned. Terrifying yet brilliant.

A little something extra

11 million admissions at the French box office and the biggest success of the decade: this is the achievement that Artus accomplished by directing his first comedy, A little something extra, dedicated to people with disabilities. It follows Paulo, a bit of a troublemaker who keeps getting into heists and finds refuge in a summer camp for people with disabilities with his father, nicknamed La Fraise. During this spontaneous stay, he meets Marie, Ludovic, Baptiste, and Thibault, forming friendships with them, leading to a touching, human, often funny film, brought to life by endearing actors, all of whom have disabilities.

Daaaaaali!

For about a decade, Quentin Dupieux has been churning out wild films, and Daaaaaali!, an extraordinary biopic of the famous Spanish painter, is no exception. Released in 2023 between Yannick and The Second Act, his twelfth feature film showcases the various encounters between Salvador Dali and a French journalist (Anaïs Demoustier) for a documentary project. To embody the megalomaniac Dali, a lineup of actors including Édouard Baer, Jonathan Cohen, Gilles Lellouche, Pio Marmaï, and even Didier Flamand take turns, creating a comedy that is at least as surreal as he was.

On November 17 on Canal +

Dune : Prophecy
, season 1

In the beginning, there was dust... and female supremacy. While Paul Atreides’ fate became clearer on the big screen last February with the release of the second part by Denis Villeneuve, the past of the Bene Gesserit order, a sisterhood of women who have remained in the shadows to pull the strings of interplanetary political intrigue, is set to take shape on the small screen with Dune Prophecy. This prequel, featuring the talented Emily Watson (Chernobyl) and Olivia Williams (The Crown), draws inspiration not from the works of Frank Herbert, which served as the foundation for the film adaptation, but from The Sisterhood, a novel co-written by his son, Brian Herbert.
