Under the sun exactly, but at what cost? While the French Riviera continues to be a dream destination for vacationers, it’s starting to annoy the locals more and more. Nice, the eternal postcard of the French Riviera, now finds itself on the podium of the most affected cities by overtourism in France, just behind Cannes. This ranking is no small matter: it comes from the brand new “Touriscore,” an indicator developed by the website “Dream City,” which was previously known for its more idyllic rankings on quality of life.

With a precise methodology, this ranking gets right into the details by closely examining four key factors: the share of tourist rentals in the city center, the impact of Airbnb on real estate, the proportion of professional landlords, and, surprisingly revealing, the density of bars and restaurants per square kilometer. The result? Nice ticks (almost) all the boxes of mass tourism. From apartments converted into vacation rentals to housing becoming increasingly unaffordable for locals, and a city center overflowing with poke bowl eateries and rooftop mojito bars.
Beneath the postcard, a much less glamorous reality
And beyond the cliché of towels too close to the beach, this ranking sheds light on a reality that’s far less appealing. It reveals neighborhoods emptied of their residents, skyrocketing rents, and a city gradually losing its charm.
a balance between hospitality and livability. This phenomenon isn’t isolated—cities like Barcelona, Venice, and Lisbon are already under pressure—but it’s taking a tangible turn in France. Nice, Annecy, Antibes, and even Paris are flirting with the red line.Voir cette publication sur Instagram
So, should we close the borders or ban rolling suitcases? Not necessarily. But let's think about a tourism that is more regulated, better distributed, and, why not, more respectful. Because by turning our cities into Instagram backdrops, we risk emptying them of what makes them vibrant: the people who live there year-round.
