Back in 1995, "La Haine" hit theaters, and France was taken by storm. For the first time, or almost, Mathieu Kassovitz portrayed on screen the suburbs (here, the Muguets estate in Chanteloup-les-Vignes, in the Paris region), their population (through a multiethnic trio), and the climate of insecurity that prevails, caused by police violence and the ensuing riots. Awarded the Cesar for Best Film in 1996, it was inspired by the murder of Makomé M'Bowolé, a 17-year-old boy shot at point-blank range in the head by Inspector Pascal Compain three years earlier.Of course! 30 years later, this work still resonates just as true, despite the awakening of consciences. "So far, nothing has changed." This is in fact the title of Mathieu Kassovitz's new show, which revisits his old script and his three iconic characters - Vinz, Saïd, and Hubert, for an original, bewildering project, mixing genres and eras.

A performance in 14 acts inspired by the film

Anyone who knows La Haine, its violence and impeccable cinematography, is skeptical when hearing about a musical adaptation. Where will it go? Who will it appeal to? Isn't there a risk in this project of romanticizing horror, when the film had touched an entire generation with its raw power? But.Ant, the pitch presents itself as, if not convincing, at least intriguing. The form of the show aims to be "innovative", with "14 tableaux inspired by the film", broadcasted on a "projection system", coupled with the "actors' performance on stage". A mishmash of "dance, cinema, rap, theater, and live performance," we are told. A grand incoherent mess or stroke of genius? Time will tell, but the man in charge, producer of the show, is none other than Farid Benlagha, who is responsible for the success of Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers, and Rock It All. To cast the iconic roles, long months and over 3,000 candidates auditioned. The lucky ones are finally Alexander Ferrario (Vinz), Samy Belkessa (Saïd), and Alivor (Hubert). The first was seen in "Tu mérites un amour".2019, the second in La Plus belle pour aller danser (2023), while Alivor is a young rapper from Le Havre. "We selected individual talents, but above all people capable of working together," explains Farid Benlagha. "There needed to be a chemistry because beyond the social content, La Haine is the story of three friends spending a day together." All this group will showcase their skills on the stage of the Palais Nikaïa in Nice on April 25 and 26, 2025. Tickets are already on sale.
