In recent years, Nice has gradually reduced parking spaces to smooth out traffic and promote sustainable mobility. The new municipal majority is making a significant shift: their plan includes the creation of several thousand additional parking spaces, especially on the surface, as a direct response to the past reductions that many Niçois experienced as a constraint. The most visible measure for residents is the extension of free parking: from 1 hour to 2 hours throughout the city. This is a concrete gesture that changes the daily lives of those who come to do their shopping downtown or head into the city for a quick appointment. The end time for paid parking will be moved to 7 PM instead of the current 8 PM, with a 15-minute grace period before any ticketing occurs.
A plan that considers the whole picture
Beyond this...; in addition to traditional parking, the plan addresses broader issues. 8,000 additional spaces dedicated to two-wheelers would be created by utilizing currently unused urban areas, as a response to the saturation of motorcycle and bicycle parking in central neighborhoods. Additional delivery zones would also be created to reduce double-parking, one of the major traffic headaches in Nice during the day.

And the most innovative measure of the bunch might just be the platform for sharing parking spaces between individuals: a digital tool that would allow us to make use of private parking spots that sit empty during the day. This concept already exists in other French cities and could free up a stock of invisible yet very real parking spaces in Nice.
A return of cars to the city that will spark debate
These pro-car measures are sure to stir reactions in a city where the question of the car's role often brings municipal councils and local associations to the table. Nice's motorists are now eagerly awaiting the implementation schedule. Because announcing 2 hours of free parking is great, but actually seeing it put into action is even better!
