Everything began on January 10, 2022, an evening that two students from Nice will never forget. Around 10 PM, as they walked along Avenue Robert-Schumann near the Law School, a man suddenly appeared. One of them would be raped and robbed, while the other would suffer an attempted robbery accompanied by violence. Fear set in, and the university area became the scene of multiple assaults within just a few days.
A long and bumpy investigation
For five days, from January 10 to 15, 2022, panic reigned around the university. Four complaints of sexual assaults and rape were filed, and two suspects were arrested. The first was quickly cleared of any wrongdoing, while the second, deemed legally insane, was involuntarily hospitalized. The headache continued for investigators, but one crucial piece of evidence didn’t lie: the rapist’s DNA, found on his victims, pointed to another man.

A suspect found thanks to DNA
It is ultimately thanks to this DNA that the Local Judicial Police Service (SLPJ) identified the culprit. The 31-year-old man, of Tunisian nationality and under an OQTF, has been referred and charged according to our colleagues from Nice-Matin. This marks a significant breakthrough in an investigation that took months of meticulous work.
