In connection with the United Nations Ocean Conference taking place in Nice next June, the Biennale of Arts and the Ocean invites us to explore a series of artistic projects centered around the theme "The Sea Around Us." Among them is the exhibition Seas and Mysteries at the Charles Nègre Museum of Photography, showcasing the works of one of the world's greatest marine photographers: Laurent Ballesta.

Diving into the world's waters

The seas and oceans of the world make up 70% of the planet's surface. Together, they create spaces filled with mystery, mostly unexplored, that fascinate as much as they frighten. It is this still largely unknown part of the living world that the Museum of Photography invites us to explore today, through the captivating images of Laurent Ballesta.

From the icy waters of the Adélie Sea in Antarctica, to the depths of the Mediterranean, and through the South pass of Fakarava, a shark-populated atoll in French Polynesia, the institution reveals to us three series of photos that open a window to this aquatic world that transcends us. As we move through the halls, the vivid colors, the play of light, and the ballet of marine creatures of all kinds literally immerse us in an almost magical world, so close, and yet out of reach.

A doorway to the oceans

In total, there are 53 phot...Biographies that await you here. Unique snapshots where movement and stillness blend, silence and noise, death and life, offering us all the complexity and all the resources of these extraordinary spaces. Through their work, the artist and biologist confronts us with our misunderstanding and our lack of knowledge that remains extremely significant when it comes to these vastnesses often inaccessible to Man.

From monumental views of icebergs to the powerful and wild grey sharks of French Polynesia, and even a fascinating bullfish photographed right here in Nice, the Museum of Photography presents stunning snapshots that will leave you in awe. This rich, extremely poetic exhibition by Laurent Ballesta highlights environmental questions we are currently facing, which will be discussed during the United Nations conference.
