It’s not every day that a Michelin-starred chef opens a new spot, and even less so a bistro as fabulous as this one! In Nice, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, the first South African to earn a star in the Red Guide, is stepping away from the pristine tablecloths of his restaurant JAN (almost) for a more relaxed, bold venture: Le Bistrot de JAN. The decor? A cozy atmosphere, walls that evoke French elegance, artistic nods to Jean Cocteau, and a touch of retro glamour that makes you want to savor your meal until closing time!

Celery Remoulade with Flambéed Big Prawns in Pastis
On the plate, Jan Hendrik has fun. The menu travels between childhood memories and multicultural winks, with one foot in Provence and the other in Pretoria. You can find classic French dishes like sole meunière, tournedos Rossini, île flottante, and even some lesser-known South African treasures like vegetarian bobotie, chicken pie, or malva pudding. A special mention goes to the “Daddy’s Big Prawns” flambéed in pastis! They are generous, seemingly simple, yet incredibly delicious.

The bistro may be more accessible than its starry big brother, but the chef's rigor and creativity remain untouched. A bistro of the present that looks back at the past with fondness and toward the future with excitement! (Did you catch that witty phrase?).
