A historic change for users

After 45 years of faithful service, the famous Edmonson paper ticket will take its final bow. "This is a new step, we are entering a new era," declared Pascal Bolo, president of Semitan. This transition to contactless tickets marks an important turning point in the history of Nantes transportation.

A contactless, rechargeable, and reusable ticket

The new contactless ticket, in a credit card format, will feature an electronic chip that allows easy recharging and validation. Available starting May 19, 2025, these tickets will keep the current offers: 1-hour ticket, 24-hour ticket, airport shuttle, and more. Additionally, the "1h x 10" ticket (formerly the 10-pass booklet) will become multi-validatable: you just need to scan it multiple times according to the number of travelers. Each type of ticket will have its own color for quick identification.
Paper tickets will still be usable until the end of September 2025. After that, only the new formats will be accepted. However, users will have until the end of July 2026 to exchange their tickets.Old tickets can be exchanged for contactless versions.

132 new ticket vending machines installed across the network

To support this transition, Nantes Métropole has invested 7 million euros in new ticket vending machines (DTT). By the end of September, 132 machines will be deployed throughout the network, ensuring optimal accessibility. These new devices, equipped with touch screens, will allow payments in cash (with change given), by bank card, and via contactless payment with your smartphone.
“Today, we have three types of machines, each with different limitations. Some don’t accept bank cards, while others don’t give change. This change was about harmonization and modernization,” explains Aurélia Joussaume, Customer Experience and Mobility Coordination Director at Semitan.

A step towards direct card payments onboard?

With these new systems, a question arises: will it soon be possible to pay directly by bank card onboard, like on the Star network in Rennes? Pascal Bolo anticipates...;re les attentes : « This will come with a future investment. Our current priority is expanding the network with the new lines 6, 7, and 8, as well as introducing new tram units. »
