The people of Montpellier dreamed of it, and history made it happen. While renovating under the Place de la Comédie, workers discovered a forgotten underground passage… leading directly to the beach! Yes, you read that right. No more traffic jams on the road to vacation, this tunnel would connect the historic center to the Mediterranean in just a few minutes.
It was while digging for a water network modernization project that the workers stumbled upon a bricked-up entrance, hidden behind a stone wall. After clearing it, they discovered a spiral staircase descending deep underground… before opening up into a mysterious corridor several kilometers long.
"At first, we thought it was an ancient underground passage from the Middle Ages, but as we went further, we noticed the air getting more humid… and we could hear the sound of waves!" recounts Maxime, one of the still-shocked workers.
A passage several centuries old?
Local historians are certain: this tunnel dates back to the 18th century and was built to allow the notable citizens of Montpellier to reach the sea discreetly. "It was likely a privileged access for elites who wanted to avoid the crowd and enjoy the beach in peace," explains a specialist in ancient architecture.
Some rumors even speak of a passage used by smugglers to discreetly transport wine and spices. Others, more outlandish, mention a secret project by the Templars or an initiative from Emperor Napoleon III for private swimming events.
Towards a reopening to the public?
Since this discovery, the Montpellier city hall is studying the possibility...The goal is to rehabilitate the tunnel and turn it into a unique attraction. "We're already imagining an underground funicular or a conveyor belt like at airports, to make the experience accessible for everyone," shares an enthusiastic elected official.
Some groups are already calling for an immediate opening, to create a new eco-friendly and express way to reach the beach without traffic jams or parking hassles. Others, more skeptical, are worried about an invasion of tourists and a skyrocketing price for mojitos by the sea.
So, could Montpellier soon become the first city with an express metro to the beach ? Stay tuned… but we suggest you start getting your flip-flops and sunscreen ready!
