Published on January 21st, the TomTom Traffic Index 2025 provides a rather serious (and a bit gloomy) overview of global traffic. Based on the analysis of over 3.6 trillion kilometers traveled, this 15th edition clearly shows a trend: congestion is increasing everywhere. Worldwide, the average rate climbs to 25%, which is five points higher than last year. In simple terms, we’re all spending more time stuck than moving. France ranks 48th in the world with a congestion rate of 20%. Not catastrophic, but far from smooth sailing.

Montpellier, the third most congested city in France

Contrary to popular belief, Paris isn't the absolute queen of traffic jams. According to TomTom, Lyon takes the lead.

>, followed by Bordeaux. And on the third step of the podium : Montpellier. Yes, Montpellier, ahead of Paris and Marseille ?! In the Hérault metropolis, the average speed during peak hours maxes out at 25 km/h, with a striking outcome : 85 hours lost per year in traffic jams, which is almost four days of life spent staring at a bumper. That's enough to deeply reflect on the meaning of existence (or consider biking).

And what about elsewhere in the South ?

If Montpellier is hogging the spotlight, the rest of the South isn't completely spared either. Avignon ranks 16th, Toulouse 23rd. Everywhere, the numbers are rising compared to last year, a sign that the situation isn't really improving. While we wait for a mobility revolution, all that's left is to endure... or learn to love podcasts.
