Nestled in the heart of the Luberon, the village of Gordes stands out as one of the most beautiful in France. Recently recognized by Travel + Leisure magazine as one of the most stunning villages in the world, it captivates visitors with its dry stone architecture, steep alleyways, and sweeping views of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. Dominated by a 16th-century castle, the village seems to float above the surrounding valleys, bathed in light and surrounded by typically Provençal landscapes. But beyond its overall charm, there’s one particular place that draws international attention: the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sénanque.

The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sénanque, a Monastic Jewel
Founded in 1148 by monks from Ardèche, the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sénanque is regarded as a masterpiece of Cistercian Romanesque art. Still home to a community of Brothers, it stands out for its clean architecture made from local stone and the atmosphere of silence that fills its walls. The site even ranks 6th on Travel + Leisure's list of the most beautiful places in Europe, confirming its status as an exceptional site with international significance.

A Natural Setting Enhanced by Lavender
Nestled in a secluded valley, the abbey offers an immersive visit to the heart of several historic spaces, from the abbey church to the cloister, and including the chapter house and the old dormitory. The experience extends outdoors, where the gardens tended by the monks host aromatic and medicinal plants. In summer, the lavender fields transform the landscape into a purple sea, creating a visual and fragrant decor that fully contributes to the unique reputation of the site.
