The famous Shanghai ranking, which celebrates the world's best universities every year, has just revealed its 2026 edition. Among the 1,000 institutions selected, 27 are French, and the University of Montpellier ranks between 151st and 200th place worldwide.

Montpellier keeps its place on the international university map. Published on Saturday, August 15, 2026, the Shanghai ranking lists this year the 1,000 best universities in the world. France counts 27 institutions and climbs to 10th place worldwide in the number of universities represented. The University of Montpellier maintains its position in the range of 151st-200th best in the world, and ranks between 6th and 8th place in France.

Montpellier in the global top 200

With more than 50,000 students, including nearly 2,000 doctoral students and 10,000 international students, the University of Montpellier appears once again in the cglobal ranking. The institution has around 5,000 employees, including nearly 2,800 academic and research staff.

This year, Shanghai ranks it in the 151-200 bracket, with universities beyond the 100th place grouped by ranges rather than individually ranked. It's therefore impossible to say that Strasbourg is precisely 151st, 175th, or 200th: it belongs to this group of around a hundred institutions. 

27 French universities among the top 1,000

On the national level, France maintains an impressive position in the rankings with 27 institutions listed and 4 universities in the top 100. Paris-Saclay leads the French ranking at 13th place globally, followed by PSL, 33rd, Sorbonne University, 55th, and Paris Cité University, 57th.

France thus ranks 10th globally in number of institutions present and 4th globally for the number of universities in the top 50, tied with Switzerland, Japan and Germany. Two institutions are also making their debut: the University of Western Brittany, for the first time, and the University of

of Angers, which returns to the ranking after several years of absence.

Harvard remains the best university in the world

At the very top of the ranking, American and British institutions continue to reign. Harvard maintains the top position globally, ahead of Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Cambridge, Berkeley, Princeton, Oxford, Columbia, the California Institute of Technology and Chicago round out the top 10.
