It’s a hand extended to everyone, both literally and figuratively. For its grand comeback in the cultural scene, Montpellier is going all out: the Carré Sainte-Anne, closed since 2017 for renovations, is getting ready to open its doors and stained glass windows with an XXL exhibition by JR. Yes, the JR. The photographer known for his oversized collages, the one who transforms monuments into living canvases. On May 27, the venue will officially reopen, and June 26 will mark the launch of Adventice, an immersive installation that’s bound to make quite a splash in the streets of Montpellier (and beyond).
JR is reaching out to you...to showcase your hand!
But what really makes this event unique is the call from the artist to the community. No need to have a degree in Fine Arts or know how to draw a tree by hand. JR simply asks for... your hand. More specifically: a black and white photocopy of it, nicely done!Rave; flat, A4 format, with a small piece of forearm. A hand, cut out and then sent, that will join thousands of others to form a gigantic tree inside the deconsecrated neo-Gothic church. A collective work, a tribute to the city's mixed origins and its historic botanical garden, born from a local legend about exotic seeds that once arrived at the docks of Montpellier.

Are you in Montpellier? Leave your mark in the town hall or at the tourist office. Living elsewhere? No excuses: slide your hand into an envelope before June 15th. The address: Exposition Carré Sainte-Anne, Ville de Montpellier, 1, Place Georges Frêche, 34 267 Montpellier Cedex 2. One hand after another, JR weaves a bond between the locals and their heritage. And if Montpellier is reborn with flair, it’s also thanks to you.
