The Fabre Museum and the Louvre have just signed a framework agreement!as ambitious as it is exciting. On Tuesday, July 29, Juliette Trey, director of the Fabre Museum, and Laurence des Cars, president-director of the Louvre, met in Montpellier to formalize a historic artistic and scientific alliance. Behind this signature is a shared commitment to circulate artworks, knowledge, and audiences, and to create strong connections between the two institutions. A real pact for cultural outreach, launched as part of the bicentennial of the Fabre Museum.

Heading for 2027: 6,000 Years of History Within Reach

The first major exhibition resulting from this partnership is set to arrive in 2027 and promises to be colossal. Dedicated to Eastern Antiquities, it will trace over six millennia of history, from Byblos to Sumer, passing through Babylon and Susa. A spectacular dive into the origins of civilization, made possible thanks to the support of the Louvre's Department of Eastern Antiquities, in co-curation. This monumental exhibition could even…squo;étendre jusqu’au site archéologique de Lattara, adding a local dimension to this universal odyssey. This is what we call making the link between the past and the territory.

Unveiling the Fabre Museum, recently enlarged. The Louvre will lend several masterpieces from the romantic master for the occasion, and the exhibition might even have a second life at the Louvre-Lens. An aesthetic dialogue between Paris and Montpellier is on the horizon, promising to be as rich as it is moving.

This is just the beginning of a strengthened cultural exchange between the two museums. In addition to these two flagship exhibitions, the agreement includes a policy for lending and depositing works to enrich the collections and circulate the treasures of heritage. The Louvre has already deposited 11 works at the Fabre Museum, and this number is expected to rise. A wonderful way to keep art alive beyond the Parisian walls and to establish Montpellier as a true cultural capital of the South.
